Exploring the hidden gems of Costa Rica in your rental car

Exploring Costa Rica by car is one of the best ways to discover the hidden gems of our beautiful country. While you may have come across some "adventure stories" on social media about driving here, the reality is much more manageable than it often sounds. With a bit of local insight, you'll find that getting around is part of the fun!

To help you prepare for your journey, we’ve put together a few essential tips for a smooth and stress-veering experience.

Understanding Insurance

In Costa Rica, the government requires a mandatory Third-Party Liability insurance for all rental vehicles. When you are looking at quotes online, double-check that this mandatory coverage is included. It is a common misunderstanding to assume that credit card insurance covers everything; while many cards provide excellent collision coverage, they rarely satisfy the specific legal requirements for government liability. Checking this ahead of time ensures there are no surprises at the pick-up counter, allowing you to start your vacation on a high note.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Costa Rica’s landscape is wonderfully diverse. While our main highways are excellent, the "path less traveled" often involves gravel roads or steep inclines.

  • Ask Your Host: No matter where you are staying, it’s always a good idea to ask if a 4-wheel drive (4x4) is necessary.

  • Embrace the Adventure: Even if your villa is on a paved road, a 4x4 gives you the freedom to reach those tucked-away waterfalls, secluded hiking trails, and breathtaking scenic lookouts that make this country so special.

Those Flashing Lights

If you see a Policia vehicle behind you with its blue and red lights flashing, take a deep breath - you likely haven't done anything wrong! In Costa Rica, it is standard practice for police officers to keep their lights on while patrolling to maintain a visible presence and help everyone feel secure. Unless they specifically signal for you to pull over, they are simply "on the beat."

What to Do in an Accident

While we hope your trip is nothing but smooth sailing, it’s good to be prepared. If you are involved in a fender-bender:

  1. Stay Put: Do not move your vehicle, even if you are blocking part of the road. This is a local legal requirement for insurance purposes.

  2. Call 911: They have English-speaking operators who can assist you.

  3. Contact the Rental Agency: Call your rental company immediately to report the incident.

  4. Document Everything: Take plenty of photos of the scene and both vehicles from various angles.

Local Recommendations in Quepos

If you are starting your journey here in Quepos or Manuel Antonio, we are fortunate to have several reputable, high-quality rental agencies nearby.

  • At Marina Pez Vela: You can find an office of Alamo-Enterprise-National located right in the heart of the marina.

  • Nearby: Adobe Car Rental is another reputed company located just a short 5-minute walk from the marina.

All of these providers offer modern, reliable, and well-maintained fleets, ensuring you can explore our stunning coastline with peace of mind.

Safe travels and enjoy the ride!
